Gymboss Interval Timer Review

GymBoss Interval Timer Review

Concentrate on your workout rather than the clock!

The Gym Boss Interval Timer has been a consistent top seller on our Pedometers Australia.com shop for personal fitness trainers, Boot Camp instructors and people like myself, who exercise at home or with friends in the great outdoors.

With the recent release of the new Pink Gym Boss Timer, I thought it was high time I write a review on this versatile training buddy. After all, I’ve been using the Gym Boss to help with my interval walking programs and home workouts for the past year.

GymBoss = hassle free solution to timing intervals

As an avid fitness walker, interval training is an essential training method and one that burns more calories and keeps my walking workout fresh and challenging. Before the days of the Gym Boss Timer, I’d use my sports watch when walking and find myself constantly looking at the digital display to know when to speed up or slow down – it was really frustrating! But with the Gym Boss clipped to my pocket, I can preset my intervals before leaving home and focus on my walking intensity rather than the clock.

There’s a lot to like about the GymBoss Timer.

In fact, GymBoss is one of those products that you might hear yourself saying… “Why didn’t I buy this sooner?”

Its size and shape looks pretty similar to a pager, but the Gym Boss has a large easy-to-read LCD display. A spring lever clip allows for the timer to securely connect to your workout clothing or gym bag and allows for quick release.

You can set one or two intervals of between 2 seconds and 99 minutes for as many as 99 sets. Plus, the Gymboss can be used as a stop watch and countdown timer – that’s amazing versatility for such a compact unit.

Setting intervals on the Gymboss timer is pretty easy, it’s just a matter of clicking the numbers up and down. If you go past the function you want to change, there’s the handy option to scroll back through the options. Here’s a great video to show just how easy the Gym Boss Timer is to set up.

I though I might enlist the help of a few Pedometers Australia staff members to be part of my review and created a mini fit break ‘Boot Camp Walking Workout’ to hear their thoughts on the interval timer. Jackie and Amy are my ‘test dummies’ today.

My mini Boot Camp walking workout:
3 minutes brisk walking pace
30 second lunges or squats
Repeat 3 times.

As the ‘trainer’ I attached the GymBoss Timer to my pants and, giving Jackie and Amy quick run down of our mini-walking workout, we set off out the door for a quick warmup before activating the GymBoss Timer.

Here’s what Jackie had to say about the GymBoss Timer…

“I walk a little slower than Kate and Amy so during the brisk walking interval I was a few metres behind them. I could easily hear the beep sound of the Gym Boss Timer without having to keep my eyes on Kate. That made me worry less about not hearing the beep and instead I focused on my walking posture and intensity.”

Amy had this to say…

“ I agree with Jackie, the beeping of the GymBoss Timer was easy to hear and I liked having Kate’s full attention, she wasn’t having to keep looking at her watch during the walking session and instead focused more on motivating us. I can see why the GymBoss is so popular with personal trainers.”

The little feature that makes The GymBoss Timer extra special

You can set the interval timer to vibrate instead of beep, or a combination of both. This is ideal if you’re using the GymBoss at your local fitness centre and are among other people. Plus, at the end of your last set, the final beep lasts for ten seconds so you know it’s time to stop. That’s the time to collapse in a heap!

My final thoughts

The GymBoss Interval Trainer is a perfect training partner. You can use it just as effectively for home use, on your stationary bike, cross trainer or your own mini-circuit workout. It’s great value for money and you don’t need to be a gadget minded to operate it.
